Buku ini merupakan kajian pergulatan intelektual Gus Dur  dalam ranah ilmu-ilmu sosial tatkala Indonesia masih di bawah kekuasaan Orde Baru. Ditulis   dengan pendekatan empiris, buku ini lahir karena berbagai tipologi yang disematkan sejumlah pihak pada pemikiran Gus Dur banyak mengandung bias yang mengakibatkan paradigma tertentu menjadi dominan dan tidak bebas nilai dalam memetakan sebuah pemikiran. Pemikiran Gus Dur hampir selalu membincangkan sebuah alternatif sehingga menggerakkan diskursus humanistic economics yang tidak hanya menjadikan pertumbuhan ekonomi sebagai target utama pembangunan,  melainkan terpenuhinya hak-hak kemanusiaan secara  universal. Buku ini berisikan kajian atas  intelektualisme Gus Dur yang lebih kepada kajian atas elaborasi ilmu-ilmu sosial sehingga terlihat sosoknya sebagai pemikir sosial.
